Break the Bias with Inspirational Women Artisans!

42% of women reported experiencing gender discrimination at their workplace.

Women earn around 20% less than their male colleagues

23% of women are likely to be considered incompetent because of their gender.

While these numbers are still concerning, in the last few years there has been an upward trend to highlight and reduce the bias and discrimination that women face at work. 

In support of the International Women’s Day movement to #BreakTheBias, let’s take a look at how a group of Nepali women artisans overcomes gender bias at their local community level.

Our story in Nepal began from the dreams of a woman who wishes to learn simple skills that she can use to create unique products to sell and make a living for her family.

Feeling empowered and respected in her family and community, she decided to create a skill development program for local women who share the same goal: wanting to be employed and earn just enough to provide for their families without having to leave their hometown.

In this program, the women learn skills like sewing, weaving using traditional looms, and dyeing cotton using natural dyes. With these skills at hand, they managed to produce one-of-a-kind handwoven bags and accessories.

Through the sale of the products, these women artisans became independent, created a better life for themselves and their families, and broke the gender bias and inequality in their local community.
